There’s something called bioaccumulation; which is the increasing concentration of a substance - as it moves up the food chain. Everyday - most of us are exposed to tiny amounts of toxins - in our food, our air, our water, our household cleaning products as well as our daily hygiene products. And this bioaccumulation puts us at an increasing risk for disruption and disease. Therefore it is very powerful, responsible and necessary to educate ourselves about what we welcome into our home: our bodies, our families and communities.
Today we meet someone who’s hand-crafted products are safe, healthy, nourishing and affordable, as we learn how to stay healthy throughout the winter months of the pandemic and take an exciting dive into the world of plant based folk-medicine.
When it comes to self care - a huge factor is preventative care. Today we learn how to stay healthy during the winter months, and how as we dive
Because we use these products every single day it is so very, very important that we use natural and safe ingredients. It is the incremental, daily, lifelong exposure to toxic, hormone disrupting materials that slowly and surely erodes our health.
Here you will find information and resources for learning, making informed choices and reducing harm for ourselves.
At Meraki Farmacy we think it is a basic human right to have access to products that are safe, healthy, nourishing and affordable. We think environmental destruction and exploitation is not worth any price. We make good choices for our bodies, our families, and this planet we call home. I offer the basics, the things we use the most often for the span of our lives: soap, toothpaste and deodorant. I also offer some essentials for first aid/home health care with a focus on supporting our central nervous systems and psychospiritual/emotional development and care.

Perhaps food at its most basic level is fuel to simply keep us alive. Substance to keep our bellies full and our engines running. Some foods, though they may keep us alive for the moment, may be slowly killing us. On the other end of that spectrum there’s the foods and drinks that have the power to heal us. That’s where we pick up today. Did you know that drinking tea can help protect brain health, improve heart health, boost energy levels, support weight loss, aid in digestion and help to regulate blood sugar? Not all teas display these qualities. Today we find out how to pick out - and prepare the right teas - in a way that supports the highest benefit to your health and well being. Let's find out what happens when your body’s fuel - is intentional.

When it comes to waging a successful, local revolt, it's all about getting back to the basics and removing ourselves from the system that's no longer serving us. We can begin to remove ourselves from the Corporatocracy’s disease for profit food system by eating healthy, natural and locally grown, whole plant foods. When we were in Houston we met Danny Wilson at Farm Dirt and learned how healthy soil and compost - free from animal by-products can set the foundation for some really nutrient rich foods. Today we’ll hear the story of a pretty incredible family farm in North Carolina who has taken this theory and put it to the test. It’s called Flow farm. And today we’ll learn how they did what they were told simply couldn't be done.

In our last episode we dove into veganic permaculture - and what sets it apart from conventional methods. We also talked a little bit about food forests - which we’re definitely gonna have to do a full episode on soon. But we’ve noticed a growing increase in one topic specifically that’s been coming a lot lately. And that’s the topic of foraging.. So in preparation for this podcast I went on a foraging tour in the mountains of Horseshoe North Carolina. But according to the website of my next guest you don’t need to be in a rural environment to find healthy, wild foods growing all around you. All you need to get started is a guide who knows your area. Today we learn the common myths and benefits of foraging!

What is Veganic Permaculture? Interview w/ Tony Martin
Friday Aug 28, 2020
Friday Aug 28, 2020
Since our recent trip to Farm Dirt in Houston we started learning about sustainable, nutrient rich compost which is free from all animal byproducts that are in conventional and organic compost. This led us to veganic farming and permaculture. But what in the hell is veganic farming and permaculture?
"Veganic growing is but one aspect of a dynamic culture. Our commitment is to peace and justice for people, animals and the environment in a sustainable balance. To achieve this we must change our lifestyles and introduce a philosophy which will continue to maintain our unique planet. We are motivated by our awareness of the great unease in society that we are moving towards a world that can no longer sustain life in the natural way it has always evolved." -Tony Martin
Tony Martin has always been interested in gardening since sampling real food grown in his grandparents garden when he was a kid. After growing food for 13 years in a 5th of an acre garden in Derbyshire UK he decided he needed a bigger play space and 15 years ago brought 5.5 acres of Welsh hillside where he planted over 12,500 trees and hundreds of fruit bushes. He has recently taken over as editor of the Vegan Organic Network’s magazine Growing Green International (GGI).
The Vegan Organic Network Aims:
-To educate the public about how their food is grown.
-To network with growers locally and around the world.
-To specify the methods and standards for veganic growing and to enable growers to become certified using these standards.
-To support veganic demonstration, education and research centres.
-To encourage veganic cultivation on a small scale as well as commercial growing.
-To support farmers who want to convert to veganic growing and individuals who want who want to learn how to grow veganically.
-To campaign for a veganic standard label on produce.

Secrets to healthy soil w/ Danny Wilson
Friday Aug 28, 2020
Friday Aug 28, 2020
Thanks to Covid-19 a lot of folks are getting into gardening and farming right now. And we believe that’s a core component to building sustainable communities at a local level. But a lot of people are just now learning what all goes into producing healthy crops and delicious food. This episode is about compost, which plays a major role in the health of our soil, and therefore our plants. It’s where the soil gets its food from. There are two big approaches to compost; conventional and organic. The way the organic industry does it uses plant matter and dirt, mixed all together with blood meal, bone meal, feather meal, fish emulsion and other factory farm by products. It puts all that biological material together and let’s it essentially cook overtime in a big pile. And out of that comes the notoriously stinky compost smell that a lot of people are familiar with. This dude Danny Wilson, at farmdirt, has a completely different approach. It's a plant based approach. Maybe it's more natural. It’s the way nature actually operates. He's perfected not just the community business model but the formula for a really great, high-quality, plant-based compost. His compost doesn't include any inputs from the animal industry but is highly sought after to help gardeners and farmers produce really great food with a high nutrient value. Today we’ll examine the story of Danny Wilson and Farm Dirt Compost, and let him explain to us what compost is, why it plays such an important role in the production of nutrient dense crops, and how you can make this high quality, nutrient-rich, soil additive on your own.

All the ingredients for community growth w/ Wayo Longoria at Casa De Luz
Friday Aug 28, 2020
Friday Aug 28, 2020
I’ve always felt called to Austin Texas. It is afterall the city my mom acquired my name from. But I’ve just never made it down here - until now. When I pulled into the city on this sunny, July day in Texas - the temperature was sitting right at 100 degrees out. All I could think about was finding something refreshing and healthy to eat. So, I jumped on the happy cow app to look at what my options were to relax, get some work done, and grab a bite for lunch. As soon as I saw the pictures of the food and atmosphere at Casa De Luz I knew that was exactly where I should be.
I was in town - looking for people playing a unique role - in their local food economy. I thought this might be a good place to start asking around. I was eating from a delicious, colorful and substantial plate - just a couple mins after walking in. The food was great. They mentioned something about macrobiotics but I wasn’t sure what that was or meant. yet.. I sat outside on the patio and enjoyed the almost half tropical, half desert-like vibe the courtyard exudes. Before I left I briefly spoke with the manager about my podcast on local food and was told a little bit about the restaurant’s founder. A guy called Wayo.
I rolled out mega full, and satisfied but with a surprisingly light energy. And continued my journey exploring Austin. I was driving around - checking out other local food leads - when I decided to text a close - musician friend of mine - who had recently relocated back to Austin before covid. Rashah quickly texted back and said he was grabbing a bite to eat. He said I should come meet up for a minute. I called him up and asked where we should meet. He said “I’m at my favorite little vegan spot, you’ve gotta check it out. It’s called Casa De Luz”..
Out of all the awesome restaurants in Austin, I literally just ate there. Of course I would come to Rashah’s city and somehow miss running into him by a matter of minutes. So I headed back to Casa. Rashah smiled in surprise as I walked back in. Come to find out, Rashah had worked and volunteered there for 7 years. I told him about my podcast and that I was looking for people playing a grassroots role in their local food economy. He said “you gotta meet Casa’s founder Wayo”. The stars had aligned. Rasha was the connector. He introduced us and the podcast was set up for the next day.
Their motto is an Ayurvedic proverb “When diet is wrong, medicine is of no use. When diet is right, medicine is of no need.” This is the story of Wayo Longoria and Casa De Luz.
